Description:

Abstract: The SAVEGE (South America Vegetation Data) digital data files are records of vegetation location and classification as defined by the Global Land Cover Classification science group at the EROS Data Center (EDC) - USGS. The data provides coverage for all of South America. The digital data are distributed by the EROS Data Center - USGS.

Purpose: The data provide educators, scientists, and other resource managers with information on vegetation location and type for South America. The data were processed to help aid in deciphering global land cover classifications. The image was used as an ancillary data layer in the classification refinement and labelling of land cover classes derived from satellite image data.

Supplemental_Information: The data set was originally digitized from a map (Vegetation map of South America) from the "United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization". The software used for digitization was ArcInfo, ESRI. A conversion from vector to raster was performed. The original projection for the vector data was bipolar oblique.
