The South America ROAD (SAROAD) coverage is an arc (line) representation
depicting the road network of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia,
Ecuador, the Falkland Islands, French Guiana, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru,
Suriname, Uruquay, and Venezuela in South America. It is a
1:1,000,000-scale vector basemap with geographic and attribute data that
can be accessed, queried, and displayed.

The SAROAD coverage was processed for the Inter-American Geospatial
Data Network (IGDN) at the EDC. The IGDN provides access to geospatial
data in partnership with business, universities, nongovernment
organizations, and governments in the Western Hemisphere.

The SAROAD data set was converted from the Vector Product Format (VPF)
Digital Chart of the World (DCW). The DCW is a vector data base
developed by the National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA), formerly the
Defense Mapping Agency (DMA), in support of Geographic Information
System (GIS) applications. Feature content is based on the
1:1,000,000-scale Operational Navigation Charts (ONC) series. Additional
information about the Digital Chart of the World is in the report
"Development of the Digital Chart of the World". The DCW database is
described in detail in the Military Specification, dated 13 April 1992,
MIL-D-89009, and the DCW product in Vector Product Format (VPF) is
described in the Military Standard (MIL-STD-600006). The DCW VPF version
is in the public domain.

The data were acquired from the National Imagery and Mapping Agency
(NIMA), formerly the Defense Mapping Agency (DMA), on CD-ROM in
Vector Product Format (VPF). In order to perform GIS functions, the
DCW data base must be used in conjunction with user-supplied GIS
software. DCW employs a feature and attribute coding structure that
is tied to the codes used in the ONC series. Using VPFIMPORT, the DCW
tiles covering the region of South America were extracted and
converted to an ARC/INFO workspace. The VPF version of the DCW
tiling scheme is retained in the ARC/INFO database. Further
processing included the selection of the Road (DN) theme, the
tiles were MAPJOINed, CLIPped, and CLEANed with the output coverage
as SAROAD (South America Road network).
