Mapping History: A Web Map for the Study of Archaeological Sites in Turkey and Syria

Abstract

Turkey and Syria are countries which are both rich archaeologically. The region is home to what was, in the 4th through 6th centuries, the eastern Roman Frontier. Today archaeological work in this region is unadvisable or impossible due to the political climate and the current conflict. This has created the need for a tool which will allow researchers to visualise and study the archaeological sites in eastern Turkey and Syria. Web applications have been used by archaeologists for a number of different purposes and commonly include elements to visualise the data that they are presenting. A web application has been created to determine if a web map may be created that offers enhanced visualisation for archaeological sites, and whether this web map would serve as an effective means to study archaeological sites that are located in dangerous environments remotely.
