Abstract
This thesis presents a series of three case studies of the Chinese Spring Festival Eve Variety Show
selected between 1983 and 2010. The case studies were chosen to exemplify the overall trend in
how China’s television has developed against the broader socio-political context of major economic
reforms taking place since the late 1970s.
