Abstract

A serious and mounting problem due to kala-azar exists in China, and is probably as active in N. Honan as in any other area.

In the face of traditional lines of therapy the disease continues to increase in amount and to spread geographically.

It is suggested that the only prophylactic approach with a hope of success is that designed to treat all cases of the condition, and destroy all infected dogs.

The sine Qua non is that treatment is taken to the patient, and is given either free or at a very low, uncommercial rate.

The type of disease encountered in this region is not substantially different from the Indian variety, except for the welcome absence of posttreatment dermal leishmaniasis.

It is submitted that a simplified and standardised method of diagnosis and treatment, using a minimum of fully- trained staff, is eminently suited to the problem.

Statistics are advanced to show that, in terns of the entire infected population of the limited area, preliminary results obtained were comparable with any others anywhere, and that the prospects for the completion of the work in future visits are encouraging.
