Nearly one hundred years have passed since a detailed study was made of the life and work of John Brown of Edinburgh. Dr. Brown was a voluminous writer, publishing many Biblical expositions; it was the firm conviction of several contemporary critics that Brovm's expositions would live. But like a great portion of theological literature, his works did not live, for they passed out of publication shortly after his death* Consequently, his name is largely unknown in Scotland today.en
Despite the ephemeral value of his theological writings, his work as a churchman and theologian has provided an interesting and rewarding subject of study. For Dr. John Brown was one of the most distinguished ministers and scholars in Edinburgh during the first half of the nineteenth century; in patiently tracing his steps through bitter ecclesiastical and theological controversy, one gains a deeper insight into and a greater appreciation of the history and heritage of the Presbyterian Church in Scotland,en
In Scottish Church History, Dr. Brown was one of the lesser but nevertheless important historical figures. Within the Secession and United Presbyterian Churches, he was a prominent figure and an outstanding leader whose influence upon the Church was large and lasting. In this thesis, I have purposed to give an historical account of his life and work and to show how his churchmanship and liberal theology wrought a deep, permanent influence upon the Church in Scotland, especially upon the United Presbyterian Church.en
