Abstract
Flooding is a major issue that affects the well being of a big part of the global population. This project is concerned with flooding caused by extreme rainfall events. Its aim is the development of a flood prediction model for an area that has been affected by two major rainfall induced flood events over the last 7 years. This area is Jakarta, capital city of Indonesia. Since Indonesia is a developing country, the availability of necessary data for flood modelling is minimal. Thus the main challenge of this project is to prove that lack of data can be overcome and a model can be developed, that will be based on GIS and remote sensing data globally available. For the creation of the model, HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS, two widely used modelling software packages were used. By using the simplest methods available and making some assumptions based on previous research, to overcome the lack of data, a model is developed. That model has the potential to overcome the issues raised by the data gaps and be used as a prediction tool, with satisfactory results. Nevertheless, this model can be improved in the future and return more accurate and detailed results.
