Abstract
Over the last decade, we have created for ourselves the opportunity to establish a true "knowledge commons". This is academia has not (entirely!) given up control of its scholarly output. Institutional repositories are crucially important because they embody the distributed control of those resources - especially papers and research data - which are the heart of the emerging paradigm of 'open science’.
The Coalition of Open Access Repositories(COAR) 1 is working to develop a vision and take steps towards the implementation of a knowledge commons based on repositories and open, network services, interoperating with open standards. The "Next Generation Repositories (NGR)" report 2 has generated not only interest, but has spurred the adoption of certain recommended technologies by repository platform suppliers. These are now described in a dedicated website3.
This 10x10 presentation will give a brief flavour of how, with the application of some modest technical and organisational changes, repositories are now positioned to become the foundation of a new knowledge commons.
The presenter has played a significant role in the development of the COAR NGR recommendations.
