re:think – an open access journal created and curated by undergraduate students at the University of Edinburgh

Abstract

re:think is an open-access, peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary journal established in Social Anthropology at the University of Edinburgh. re:think aims to showcase articles which explore the potential of ethnography as a form of creative research practice and expression. re:think features academic essays, short informal or reflective pieces, short films, and photo-essays created and curated by undergraduate students at the University of Edinburgh. Our journey began a year ago with a grant from the Principal’s Teaching Award Scheme and lots of enthusiasm from anthropology students and staff at the university. In creating the journal, our intention was to promote the ethnographic research undertaken by undergraduate students and to provide an encouraging experience of scholarly and personal development through the publication of this work. We sought to create a platform for varied, adventurous and imaginative work from students across the university which seeks to better understand the everyday life of ourselves and others through ethnographic research. From our background in Social Anthropology, we felt that undergraduate students university-wide needed an opportunity to collate, develop and celebrate their original and exciting ethnographic research. As a newly-established journal, we still have a lot to learn. However, with the support of the University Library staff, we have come a long way in establishing our journal on OJS, developing our peer-review and copyediting processes, and finally, celebrating the publication of our first issue in June. We are now working on a progression plan for the journal as the next academic year approaches.
