Letters from Exile: New Documents on the Marian Exile, 1553-9
Edited texts, translations and transcriptions of 40 original documents recently discovered and identified that relate to Scottish and English Protestant exiles who fled from England during the reign of Queen Mary Tudor. They cast new light upon the exiles' liturgical disputes, especially the 'Troubles at Frankfurt' [1554-5]. In the longer term this helped determine the future course of the Church of England, the Church of Scotland and the 'puritan' tradition throughout the English-speaking world. These letters and other papers provide substantial new information on exiles such as John Knox, Richard Cox, John Jewel, John Bale, Christopher Goodman, Edmund Grindal, William Whittingham and Richard Bertie. Also the relationships of the Continental Reformers, John Calvin and Peter Martyr Vermigli, to the Marian exiles.
