This study aims to develop a practical tourist mobile application for tourists and local residents in the city of Edinburgh. From the market survey done by LG and Yahoo in the year 2013, it can be concluded that from the point of view of both mobile developers and users, more of the population is choosing Android than iOS or Windows smartphones. Thus, this study chooses an Android platform combined with web app technology to develop a web based, personal eating and drinking guide. A web app combining a PhoneGap API not only has the potential ability to be cross platform but also is easier for a web developer to implement. Fun Edinburgh has three main functions. One function which provides a map of restaurants and bars, the other shows a list of restaurants and bars, and the last provides a guide for the Edinburgh jazz and blue’s festival. From a technical point of view, this app combines the benefits of a web app with location based service. Abundant details about restaurants and bars, festival events and programs were stored on the web using PERL and Oracle DBMS in order to lighten this application. The ability for a tourist app to provide a destination route planning navigation map, according to the evaluation results conducted done in this research, is the most popular function among 35 users. A full list of restaurants and bars that summaries distances from the user’s current location is also mandatory feature for users in terms of aiding them to reach a final decision to schedule a plan. Fun Edinburgh will be more eligible for publishing on the Android market if it has more tourist attractions and the ability to give ratings of bars and/or restaurants.
