dc.description.abstractAn engineering analysis of the performance of a transportation centre in the event of a fire has been conducted. This engineering analysis has been conducted following an integrated approach that included fire, structural and egress evaluations. This study was performed following the guidelines provided by SFPE, but many relevant details where left open, thus the authors have taken the liberty to add some relevant information to the brief. This study was purposely conducted in manner that does not follow any traditional guidelines for performance-based design. It emphasizes simplicity and robustness of the design outcome but uses complex tools such as CFD, Egress and Finite Element Codes. Whenever possible, analytical calculations will be used to validate the output of the models. The main consequence of this approach is a pre-conceived intention of applying minimal, if any fire protection. The project was constructed as an educational exercise to be conducted by students from the University of Edinburgh (UK) and Stord-Haugesund College (Norway) and supervised by staff from both institutions. The reader of this report has to understand that many of the liberties taken in its construction are due to the added objective of providing an educational experience. It was considered that, given the nature of the task, the added hurdle of achieving agreement between different national approaches was necessary, thus the two institutions involved. The work was divided in several areas, General Management of the Project, Fire Modelling, Structural Analysis and Design, Egress Modelling, Fire Protection. The General Management of the Project resided at the University of Edinburgh and a particular undergraduate student developed each individual task as their final year project. The process integrated all areas from the onset of the design process and design solutions where established seeking overall performance. Life safety was given priority over other specific goals such as minimization of business interruption. The project development included a third party review conducted by ArupFire, London.en
