Abstract

This thesis is in two parts; the first part contains an introduction to a manuscript which is attributed to al-Shaykh Qutb al-Din and the indices for the Arabic text which forms part two of this thesis. The introduction consists of four sections, the first of which falls into four main sub-sections. The first is devoted to a description of the Ms., whilst the second sub-section is a note on the orthography used by the copyist of this work. The next subsection refers to the title of the Ms., whilst the last is a discussion of the identity of the author. The second section of the introduction is in two main sub-sections, the first of which is a brief survey of works on the history of Medina. Here those works which are devoted to the history of Medina and its topography are cited. This survey covers the period from the second century of the hijrah until the end of the tenth century of the hijrah. The last sub-section deals with the author's main sources used in this work. The third section in the introduction is devoted to a biography of al-MarjänT, whilst the last is an outline of the Arabic text and its importance. Part Two, the major part of this thesis, is the Arabic text which provides an edition and reconstruction of the work Tärikh al-Madinah.
