Spatial analysis of commuting patterns in Scotland

Abstract

With the rapid development of transportation technology, commuting, also known as daily travelling to work, has attracted the attention of an increasing number of geographers in the past few decades because the diversity and complexity of commuting is increasing. Commuting is closely related to Scottish residents’ life, and is important for Scottish government’s goal - sustainable economic growth. The purpose of the present paper is to use the latest census data to provide a detailed description of Scottish commuting patterns, and then build commuting forecasting models based on gravity model to predict future volume of commuting and provide a basis for future transportation decisions and urban planning in Scotland.
