Abstract
An attempt is made in this thesis, to discuss the disease of variola or smallpox as a whole, laying more particular stress, however, on those points which have a hearing on the diagnosis, and at the same time to present a summary of more recent research on the subject with a view to explaining the etiology and clinical features of the disease.
The subject is considered in the light of experience gained during the three and a half years I was attached to the Metropolitan Asylums Board's Smallpox Service when I had an opportunity of seeing most of the cases certified as smallpox.
