A preliminary analysis of some Flambeau data

Abstract

Three burns are covered: 760-1, 760-2, and 460-14. Temperatures, thermal radiation, etc. were analysed, but not air movements or pressure measurements. A standard empirical intensity-tille curve was fitted to all of them, allowing intensity and time scale factor to be determined. The standard curve can be used in calculating the protection afforded by shelter and to calibrate the wood block system of instrumentation. It is hoped that the time scale factors constitute a measure of the burning rate and might ultimately serve to check various theories. However, discrepancies have been found between different elements and there were not sufficient data to resolve them.
