Abstract
During a year spent at the University or British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, the writer was encouraged "by Dr. J. Ross Mackay to study the processes of fluvioglacial erosion and deposition. An opportunity to commence work on a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Edinburgh made it possible for this interest to be developed. After discussion with Dr. J. B. Slssons the writer decided to map an area of 200 square miles in the eastern Southern Uplands, and to try to interpret the evidence collected so as to understand the processes involved in the deglaciation of the area.
