Although it has boon acknowledged to be one of the most individual Ottoman histories of the sixteenth century, the chronicle of Mustafä Selaniki (d. circa 1600) Still remains unedited, and, for the most part, unpublished - the section of the work in the Istanbul 1231/1864 printing comprising no more than a third of the total. In the present thesis the unpublished portion dealing with the events of the years 1005 - 1008 (1596 - 1600) has been edited through collation of all known manuscripts, and is intended to be the basis for a critical edition of the entire work in the near future. An will be seen from the critical apparatus heroin, the various manuscripts differ greatly among one another, and one of the major aims of this study has been to attempt the re-construction of the most probable form of the original. In the Introduction the ascertainable details of Solaniki's biography are presented; followed by a description of the language and style of his History. Emphasis is placed on the access to confidential information which his employment as secretary in the Imperial Divän afforded him, and it is this aspect of his work which is found to give it a particular importance among the other histories of the period. Unlike most of the contemporary authors, he was not servile towards the men of power in the state, and he does not hesitate to voice criticisms of even the Sultans when he feels the occasion warrants. As a chronicle of the daily activities of the administration, it allows us a view of life in Istanbul which cannot be found in the other selective histories; and Solaniki's occasional comments on these events to some extent may be taken as representative of the reaction of men of culture to the corruption and abuses which were threatening to bring about the disintegration of the state and society.
