In the last decade, as a result of the discovery
and application of new chemotherapeutic agents,
there has been a great improvement in the treatment
of infections. The two main lines of this
development have been with synthetic drugs,
particularly derivatives of sulphanilamide, and
with substances produced by micro-organisms,
particularly penicillin.
