Optical activity and polarity of substituent groups as exhibited in menthyl esters

Abstract

It may be concluded that the two types of group effect which have been previously observed, namely, the "general polar effect" visible in molecular inductive capacity, acidic strength and chemical reactivity, and the "true polar effect" as deduced from the electronic theory and traceable in benzene substitution and electromagnetic rotation, are both to be found in optical activity.
