Data management and preservation using PURE and Archivematica at Strathclyde

Abstract

The core of this brief session will present an overview of the curation and preservation workflow for research data currently implemented by the Research Data Management & Sharing Service at the University of Strathclyde. In particular it will examine the effectiveness of pairing PURE as a data repository with Archivematica as a data curation tool to deliver a practical framework for managing, distributing and preserving research data. The session will highlight the accomplishments as well as the limitations inherent in each system, and how - or if - their combination serves the particular data issues characteristic of a predominately STEM based technological university. Along the way the session will also debate the extent to which data preservation has really progressed in the previous decade, and how this progression might be measured. While the volume of data being preserved has certainly increased, are the tools available now any more effective and are the resulting data of a “FAIRer” quality? Is the current proliferation of RDMS tools and systems actually hampering a community consensus on how data preservation can be best achieved and would centralised national initiatives such as the Jisc RDSS or ANDS actually serve as a better model for future preservation and access than a confederation of individual institutions?
