Abstract
Within the Centre for Reproductive Health, the histology team provides a valuable service to underpin and support research within the Little France campus as part of the SuRF (Small University Research Facilities) service. The linked microscopy service utilises a further resource booking facility (PPMS) but there are presently no direct connections linking the two systems. Developing an integrated model, the newly-developed histology online submission and sample management service has been linked to the downstream microscope, scanning and analysis booking service through a custom-designed API. This streamlines the entire process from sample submission, preparation and staining through to calendar lookups thereby allowing researchers to perform end-to-end life cycle management of research samples and the final data generation from slide scanning and analyses directly to DataStore. Utilising authentication protocols, the system links the EASE log in information for University users and provides local administrators the control to allow specific user groups to undertake permissible tasks. As a secure Web Application, SID (Sample Information Database) extends existing functionality through responsive front end user interfaces to provide a stream-lined service offering. Moreover SID has been developed with GLP ideologies and provides a compliant sample tracking system which exceeds the current regulations for HTA (Human Tissue Act) (Scotland) for logging, management and processing of consented research samples. The application has been developed to align data management plans with real-world tracking and logging of samples from initial preparatory work to post-project curation and archiving.
