Studies in the archaeology of temperate Europe

Abstract

This submission consists of monographs, journal articles and other contributions, authored singly or in concert with others, relating to three distinct fields detailed below within the broader domain of the archaeology of temperate Europe. Significant publications that have appeared up to early 2010 are included here, with a small selection of material in press.
(a) The later prehistory of western Europe, especially Gaul, in the first millennium BC. This work is primarily focused on two, separate sub -fields: (i) the development of proto -urban settlements (`oppida') and state -level societies in the second and first centuries BC and, (ii) on a precocious, if short- lived, manifestation of state -level societies in the sixth and fifth centuries BC, for which the principal contributions are centred on a share of extensive fieldwork at Bourges Avaricum in central France.
(b) British and more particularly Scottish prehistory of all periods from hunter - gatherer times until the arrival of the Anglo-Normans. A significant proportion of this work represents a consideration of evidence from eastern Scotland between the Tay and the Moray Firth.
(c) Aspects of the development of applied professional archaeology in the UK, especially Scotland, including contributions to the formulation of the scope of archaeological resource management.
