(a) The later prehistory of western Europe, especially Gaul, in the first millennium BC. This work is primarily focused on two, separate sub -fields: (i) the development of proto -urban settlements (`oppida') and state -level societies in the second and first centuries BC and, (ii) on a precocious, if short- lived, manifestation of state -level societies in the sixth and fifth centuries BC, for which the principal contributions are centred on a share of extensive fieldwork at Bourges Avaricum in central France.
